If you like this post, please buy me a beer for $3 8-)Computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses and spyware are flooding on the network every single day. If you don’t have anti virus tools on your PC than you are nut! Ok, lets say you got all these protection, then you should know that all these protection can’t detect any new malware until the software’s publisher update it database… here I got some tips/ways to optimize your PC safety…
1.Enable Automatic Update:
Over here, I only mention on Window XP O/S. So, 1st go to My Computer, then right click it. Choose Properties, then go to Automatic Update menu. make sure you click on Automatic Download. You can choose, how frequent you want it to update and on what time. I encourage you to set it on everyday. After that, once a month visit Microsoft at windowsupdate.microsoft.com and let it scan your PC system and then download everthing labeled “critical”. Remember, every month, no exception!
2.Turn off scripting behaviors in Internet Explorer:
Viruses and worms are spread through web pages scripts. Over here I’ll talk about IE and Firefox only, on how to use it to block this threats.
In IE click Tools, Internet Options, and then Security. After that choose Earth icon, under ‘Security Level Zone’, click custom level. The settings in the dialog have three options: Disable, Enable, and Prompt. If you choose enabling anything, then you are in trouble, but being prompted every time a script or ActiveX control wants to run will drive you batty. In any event, disable ‘Download unsigned ActiveX controls’, ‘Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe’, ‘Active scripting’, and ‘Scripting of Java applets’. Set ‘Java permissions’ to High Safety.
With scripts disabled, many of your favorite Web sites may not open. To overcome this, all you need to do is just add your trusted web URL in IE Trusted Site List. Open IE and click Tools, Internet Options, Security. Select the Trusted Sites icon, click Sites, and then enter the URLs one at a time. Uncheck Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone, and click OK.
Meanwhile for Firefox, go to Tools, Option, then Content. Enable the ‘Pop-up Blocker, Java and Java Script. Then go to Security, Check the box ‘warn me when site to install add-on’ and ‘Tell me is a site I visit is a suspected forgery’. You can choose either 1, by asking Google or form the download list. Thats it! simple… ![]()
3.Control what starts up with Windows:
Many worms place a reference to themselves in a portion of the Windows Registry that defines what programs start up with Windows. I got 2 freeware that I read it review from magazine, but I never try it yet… from the review this freeware are good. They are Spybot-Search & Destro, and WinPatrol. These 2 combination can control what gets added to this list. If you like to, you can try it, It free!
4.Use a software and a hardware firewall:
If your PC equip with Free ZoneAlarm others firewall software, you still not fully safe. If you using broadband internet, you should consider using Belkin, D-Link, Linksys, and other vendors sell inexpensive broadband gateways. They can bounce back worm attacks that otherwise would reach your computer.
